Stockpile Volumetrics by Drone: Faster Counts, Safer Counts

Measuring material inventory has traditionally meant sending someone up the pile with a rod, or hiring a survey crew for a day. Both are slow, both put a person on unstable material, and both tend to happen infrequently enough that the number is stale by the time anyone acts on it.

Flying the site instead changes all three of those.

How it works

The drone flies a planned grid over the yard at fixed altitude and overlap. That imagery is processed photogrammetrically into a dense point cloud and a surface model, and volumes are computed against a defined base plane or a prior surface. On sites with vegetation or awkward toe lines, LiDAR is used instead, because it resolves the ground surface directly.

The output is a volume figure per pile, with the surface model behind it, so the number is reviewable rather than asserted.

Why operations care

  • Nobody climbs. The single biggest safety exposure in a manual count is a person on a moving pile. Aerial capture removes it, which matters for MSHA compliance and for insurance.
  • Hours, not days. An entire yard is captured in a single mobilisation.
  • Measure more often. When a count takes hours, monthly or even weekly becomes practical. Frequency is what makes the number useful for planning rather than just for reporting.
  • Your people stay on their own work. Volumetric measurement is rarely the highest and best use of site personnel.

Why finance cares

  • Fewer year-end surprises. Frequent, consistent measurement removes most of the adjustment that accumulates between infrequent counts.
  • An auditable record. Each measurement carries a dated surface model, which supports inventory audits and lender reporting far better than a spreadsheet estimate.
  • No capital outlay. No survey equipment to buy, maintain or train people on.

Being straight about accuracy

Aerial volumetrics are well within the tolerance most operations and auditors work to, and they are repeatable — which is what actually matters when you are comparing this month to last month.

They are not magic. Accuracy depends on flight planning, ground control, and how cleanly the toe of the pile can be resolved. Heavy vegetation, standing water or badly defined boundaries degrade a photogrammetric result, and that is precisely when LiDAR is the correct tool instead. Anyone quoting a single accuracy figure without asking about your site is guessing.
